About Thule
To say that Thule’s beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.

By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.

I bought this roof box and installed it on a 2005 Toyota Highlander. The instructions were simple and easy to read. Just make sure to READ them! I had to move the stock roof rack bars back a few inches, but it was no big deal. The box mounted quickly and easily using the hardware that was included. The box did not interfere with the operation of the sunroof, but it did add a little extra wind noise (and a lot of down-draft) when the sunroof is open. A little tip: after installing the box, make sure it's centered perfectly, then mark the position of the u-bolts with a silver paint marker. This way, you'll always be able to quickly and accurately re-install the Thule Excursion at a moment's notice. Also, make sure you install the rubber "dots" that are enclosed with this box. They are used to cover up the remaining holes that were drilled for other vehicle applications. Failure to do so could result in swampy luggage. One other thing...I chucked the annoying luggage straps that Thule included. After packing this thing with four duffle bags, there was no room left for anything to go anywhere!
Overall performance was good. We noticed a slight dip in gas mileage, but what do you expect?! It was incredibly handy to use this and have some free space in the interior of the SUV for my bicycle...and the family. So far, the box has gone from NJ to West Virginia University and back. It also made it from NJ to TX and back...all without a single problem (approximately 4,500 miles total). It survived an impulsive car wash that my girlfriend subjected it to and not a single leak. The only annoying thing about the box is the interior luggage anchors / u bolt mounts. They seem to snag on EVERYTHING you put inside the Thule Excursion. It's a small gripe and about the only thing I can complain about.
It's a great product and well worth the money. Now stop reading and order it already!

We purchased this carrier for our Acura RDX and headed out on a 3 week road trip. It not only held 4 regular size dufflebags, but two razor scooters/the blankets we purchased along the way/a bag of cleaning supplies/and a bag of stuff for the pool.

The product arrived earlier than the promised time and came by truck. The two drivers opened the box in front of me to ensure it was not damaged and it wasn't. Putting it on the car was quick and easy. Once we figured out what holes to use, it took about 15-20 minutes to secure it in place. The lid opens from the back and lifts up toward the front. It did not fit in one of the hotel parking garages, so we emptied it, took it off, and brought it to the hotel room on a luggage carrier :-). It fit nicely standing up in the closet and was out of sight. It also has a lock, which gave us peace of mind when we left it full at a hotel stop.

Cons: The lid is very light and feels a little loose when you open it. We lost a few mpg's (but you probably will with any carrier).

A little pricey for a poorly designed plastic box.

The quick release rack fasteners are weak at best. They are also too bulky on the interior of the box, definitely a breakage risk.

For 200, this box is a deal, any more, it's a waste. Buy the nice silver box!


I'm not cheap! I'll spend what it takes, but this is a Slight let down.

Great Rooftop Carrier,It is roomy for being a smaller size box.We needed a smaller cargo box to fit our GMC canyon.This fit the bill.Installing it took about an hour and was somewhat frustrating.Trying to line up the c shaped clamps through the holes in the cargo carrier was a bit of a challenge!My husband and I finnally completed the task.Great for weekend getaways for luggage,pillows etc.One draw back for somw people may be that it opens from the rear,not the side.Ok for us as my husband stands in the bed of the canyon to load and unload it.I would recommend it for anyone needing a smaller cargo box.Very rugged and no wind noise when driving,even on the highway.

This was just what we wanted for our 2001 Subaru Outback. Fits great and carried plenty of stuff for a trip to the Gulf Coast in May.
